QUEERING PUBLIC SPACES IN KOCHI
Urban DesignQueer InclusionFeminist PedagogyParticipatory DesignSocial Activism
This project investigates how urban spaces interact with individuals, groups, and communities, particularly focusing on how design interventions in public spaces can improve the inclusion of queer individuals. The study is situated within the city scale, emphasizing co-creation with citizens to explore real-world solutions. The document serves as a journey of discovery, grappling with reconciling multiple activist beliefs while navigating hierarchical, prejudiced societal structures. Drawing on Feminist, Intersectional, Queer, and Sociological theories, the work blends literature reviews, action-based interventions, life experiences, anecdotes, and pop culture references. The project was further developed during the Mayor of Kochi Design Fellowship, building upon prior work related to UN SDG 11—Sustainable Cities and Communities, and continues to explore how design can foster inclusivity and positive social change within urban environmentsUrban Design.
