This project explores the potential of emerging technologies like VR and XR in supporting the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through immersive, speculative worlds that reflect diverse political, social, economic, and technological contexts. Initially focused on speculative design, the project evolved to create a tool, 'Beyond,' which combines life cycle assessments (LCA) with real-time feedback in virtual reality. This prototype enables users to design objects and visualize their environmental impact, including carbon emissions, material sourcing, and ecosystem disruption. By mapping these impacts in real-time, 'Beyond' helps designers understand the full life cycle of their creations, from raw material extraction to disposal. The tool aims to bridge the gap between abstract design and real-world consequences, fostering more ethical, informed, and sustainable design practices that account for the ecological and social repercussions of creation.
