This project is a journey that has been undertaken with the intent of understanding bamboo as a material, the systems that it impacts, user perception and requirements and then taking it forward into the mainstream residential furniture and product market.
There is no doubt that it is an extremely viable, and even an increasingly necessary material, in the face of the ongoing climate crisis. However, until bamboo products meet the demands of the masses, which are cost-effectiveness, durability and desirability, bamboo remains a benched player.
This live project aims to bridge that gap and change the perception of Bamboo, not just as a green and sustainable material but also something that is desirable through design. It encompasses three projects undertaken on behalf of Bamboo Tales Pvt. Ltd, in the areas of residential furniture and home-office furniture.
Bamboo Tales is an architectural and structural design studio which works primarily with bamboo, and recently has been venturing into the domain of bamboo furniture and products. These projects gave scope to a new approach to furnishing with eco -friendly materials, and the quest of finding the right balance between desirability and cost-effectiveness, while simultaneously trying to break free from the perception of bamboo as ‘poor man’s timber’.
