Consumerism, the relentless pursuit of material possessions, and the insatiable desire for more has become a defining characteristic of our modern society. It permeates our culture, economy, and even our individual identities. Society has reached a state of mindless consumption where the lines between wants and needs have been blurred. It has also influenced how we perceive our material possessions and how we treat them.
Through the project, the author tries to bring to life a Future World where the objects have the ability to feel and express their feelings. The project tries to question the object-owner relationship and looks at how it might evolve, given the feelings of objects are also now relevant. The author tries to formulate a user-carer role for the owner, which is a significant deviation from the user role defined for the owner post the advent of consumerism.
The author used anthropomorphic channels to help objects express their feelings. The primary exploration was around diary writing. Each day the objects would write a diary entry that would be accessible to the owner. The project revolved around how such an agency to the objects would impact society and how it might change the consumerism landscape.
A set of artefacts were created along with their respective diaries as part of the make-believe world. Each artefact had a specific personality and it reflected in their diary entry.
