In India, the shampoo business is more in the sachet portfolio focusing on unit dose packs, focused mostly in rural areas or lower Income groups. To develop a new sachet/pack format to convert the current single use pack to multi-use pack (Multi-dose) and other more efficient packs in the SA region needs exploring alternative packaging solutions from existing or new technologies in the market.

This thesis was made to explore and experiment with the different ways of using design knowledge to find an alternative way to the current plastic shampoo sachets and to investigate the core problems related to social and environmental impact in the long run. These small plastics are easily discarded into urban waterways and natural environments and often end up in our seas and oceans. Given that the next available SKU is a bottle, the Re. 1 sachet is the only pack visible to them and in their mind, is the default setting. This also opens up many opportunity areas for the future narrative in the shampoo category.
