The Book of Dals is a compilation of more than 80 Dal recipes gathered by the author over the course of her lifetime and was written over a two-year period. Published by Penguin Random House, India, this book introduces readers to a variety of dals and dal-based dishes while taking them on a journey through various parts of the nation.
The key role of the student during this internship was to find the best possible way to represent these recipes in the form of a publication. The process included learning the fundamentals of publication design by understanding the content and context, learning about commercial publishing, researching, creating a structure for the content of the book, and also learning several aspects of bookmaking, including photography, art direction of the cover, typesetting, and taking up the proofing corrections.
Along with this project, the student also worked on several book cover design projects of different genres and imprints of Penguin Random House, India, during their internship tenure. This experience provided the student with a comprehensive understanding of the book publishing industry and helped them develop their skills in various aspects of book design. It also gave them exposure to working with a leading publishing house and understanding the different requirements of various genres and imprints.
