After an exchange semester at Tama Art University, the student developed an interest in developing artistic textile surfaces. She wanted to further these interests as part of the graduation project, especially traditional Japanese resist-dyeing techniques. Yavï, the sponsor, is a New Delhi based fashion and accessories label. Yavï has established itself as a brand where art meets design. The student also resonated with the brand's ethereal aesthetics and philosophy. The project brief was to design apparel and home collections for Spring/Summer-22, for clients aged between 35 and 60 in the European market. It had two main briefs - ‘REMINISCENCE’ - Tone on Tone Collection - Developing surfaces for a ‘Tone on Tone’ apparel /home collection and ‘SHADES OF THE SEA’ - The Resist Dye Apparel/Home Collection - Introducing Yuzen-zome, Japanese resist-dyeing, as a production technique. These briefs provided a diverse industry experience including making efficient use of resources, setting up a new production unit/process to expand surface sampling and production capabilities, and establishing a seamless workflow.

The COVID-19 pandemic and quarantine have confined people to closed spaces affecting the emotional health of a majority. This project intends to provide them with a reminiscing trigger that helps them reconnect with nature. The project outcome consists of textile collections intended to create moods through textural exploration and help reminisce the connection with nature. The surfaces, visually and ideologically inspired from the Wabi-Sabi aesthetics, are designed to have emotional and mental healing effects. An attempt was made to understand and respond to different behaviours of the textile medium, especially its drape and translucency, followed by an organic approach to creating the texture leading to painterly outcomes expressing organic and generative aspects of flora. The process of making the surfaces and the collections gives a visual and dogmatic Zen experience to the users.
