The objective is to understand, interpret, evaluate and re-interpret handwoven fabrics with regard to the end-use of making a stitched garment. The primary focus of the project is to understand the nuances of handwoven fabrics and implement varied constructions, weights and textures for developing garments that enhance the inherent value and diversity of handloom while also giving it a fresh outlook.

This involved re-looking and re-defining of the qualities and strengths of the handloom fabric. There are certain notions about handloom products with special regard to garments. They were also considered and worked upon while developing the fabrics. The scope of the project involves a series of trials to understand and learn the process of manipulating the basic characteristics of strength, texture, drapability, weight, look and finishing of handloom fabrics.

The term ‘engineering of fabrics’ was revisited and redefined by the student to convey the intricacies and specifics that will be dealt with and incorporated when developing handloom fabrics for an ‘added dimension’ of making stitched garments.
