This document is a holistic and comprehensive description of the graduation project by Greeshma Gireesh, who is pursuing her Master’s degree in Furniture & Industrial Design (2018) from National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. The project was completed under the sponsorship and support of My Furniture Story (MFS), Kolkata.
The intent of the project was to develop any kind of kids furniture for residential purposes. Since the end users of these furniture were supposed to be kids, there were a lot of parameters that needed to be taken into consideration while designing these furniture. While Ergonomics, Safety & Comfort were the primary factors, the designs also needed to be Montessori-inspired, Minimalist, flat-packable yet playful and embrace the BIY concept for the ease of use by kids.
The furniture detailed in this document have been manufactured by outsourced vendors of MFS through a span of 8 months. All the furniture ranges were created and provided in natural finishing, with a hint of pastel shades to ensure it fits into the aesthetic of any home. Moreover, it provides a venue for the kids or their parents to paint at their own discretion according to the theme of the home or room. MFS also provided additional paints for the perusal of the customers. Greeshma surveyed a lot of millennial parents around buying patterns to deepen her understanding of consumer behaviour. Efficient usage of voice & video calls, along with leveraging shared work-boards on Miro, facilitated them in religiously following their day to day routines and processes.
This entire document is a result of all the aforementioned activities that Greeshma undertook under the guidance and sponsorship of MFS. The complete duration of the GP was a rich and fruitful experience in understanding customer & consumer behaviour in the children’s furniture space.
