The brief was to design a text typeface in Malayalam, which could be used across multiple mediums. Currently, available typefaces do not offer a wide range of weights or other variables, and through this project, the student attempted to try and fill that gap. The initial task was to learn or relearn the Malayalam letters. By drawing them with a round nib and understanding the curves and counters of each letter and the relationship of the letters with each other, and in the process understand the script and the grammar better. The student read the history of the script to understand and figure out the contrast that came into Malayalam typefaces. Right from understanding letterforms and script grammar to studying typefaces from different periods to figure out the differences and similarities and to understand how they affect the texture. By studying calligraphy to existing fonts, the project evolved into sketching the letters and finally digitizing the final selected style.
