Level Design for a Casual Mobile Game
In 2020, mobile games made up 40% of the total revenue of the game industry. Of these, the casual mobile genre forms a large part of the profitable mobile game market. Word-based games are the newest emerging sub-genre that is seeing a meteoric rise in the market, and Playsimple Games is a key player in this market. The assigned games - Crossword Jam and Word Trip are both word anagram games. This project focused on designing levels for the word anagram games- Crossword Jam and Word Trip from the perspective of early game players. The main objective was to recognise opportunities and pain points through research within current games, to propose and implement level design interventions to boost the early game experience. The student believes that it was crucial to design an early game experience that increases player familiarity and competence to incorporate flow which is essential in early level design to acclimate players to the game mechanics as well as to upskill.
