This project started with the intention of exploring bamboo structural systems for spatial applications. However, the need to understand local practice and techniques was felt before diving into the project. Training under local artisans imparted numerous insights into the behavior of the material and its potential. The project took a turn from structural systems into exploring the material through crafts as a result of the knowledge attained through training. So begins the journey to explore and infuse different crafting techniques to furniture design.
There was an urgent need to become the artisan itself. Knowledge of the technical and practical difficulties during the design process was essential for the success of the project. Thus, design and craft goes hand in hand throughout the process which forms the backbone of the project.
This project has been a tremendous learning process on execution without and existing framework, where the framework has to be created through experience. To sum it up, this project has opened up new ways of thinking about design and its translation to tangible, functional and reliable outcome.
