The end of the student academic tenure at the National Institute of Design is marked by the culmination of a substantial investigation in the field of design on a topic closely aligned to their discipline of study. It is through the graduation project and subsequent documentation of the same that this investigation took place. The sponsor, KAT Works Engineering Tech is a product design service provider in Chennai, aiming to introduce its own line of products.
The initial idea was to explore and identify opportunities in the rapidly growing biodegradable products market segment, and design products and manufacturing processes for the same. After completing extensive research on the plastic issue, its effects on the environment, cause factors, global scenario, government initiatives, social reactions, start-ups, various market conditions, future trends and material study, ideas were generated - later to be evaluated and finalized on a concept, that would be environmentally sustainable as well as economically viable for small scale businesses. Based on this concept, the design of the product, its manufacturing processes, the design requirements for the conceptualized process are developed and documented.
