The student was given the opportunity to work with Eco Tasar Silk Pvt Ltd, which is a tasar weaving company catering to both national and international markets. The project brief was to develop a range of Art inspired Space Modifiers, through the creative application of various textile techniques such as weaving, embroidery, prints, knotting, macrame, etc. for a target market comprising architects, hotels, upscale residences with contemporary interiors, and connoisseurs of art.
The student started research with secondary resources like their websites, brochures, books, etc. to better comprehend the identity of the organization & its various products. It resulted in making a collection for one of the organizations clients called West Elm. Based on the insights garnered from the analysis, the student arrived at the theme and look board: Finding Nature. The art piece attempted to give a sense of being in nature while being surrounded by the concrete world. The challenge was to develop wall hangings, art textiles that present a unique contemporary style suitable for use in corporate or domestic interior spaces while keeping in mind the main constraint of using non-conventional but eco-friendly materials.
This involved the exploration of various materials & techniques by the student and training of artisans. The student also familiarized with these processes to create expressive woven surfaces. Techniques of tapestry on handloom and weft-faced structures were explored using a wide range of yarn types. Working on the project, not only helped the student develop a well-rounded skill set but also excellent relationship with time management.
