Mr. Vijai Singh Katiyar

Vardhman Textiles Limited, Baddi

She chose to intern at the Vardhman Group of Industries, which is a major textile integrated producer in India. Working within an integrated setup in Vardhman was a completely different experience. Their clientele is segregated into American, European, Asian and Indian (brands) markets. Her design brief included developing a collection of menswear top weight fabrics, for Allen Solly and United Colours of Benetton (UCB), SS’21.

The first phase included the research on the Company’s infrastructure. The second phase included a detailed study of brands through primary and secondary resources and the profiling of customers. To understand the millennial youths, she carried out a physical client survey in Ahmedabad as well as an online survey.
The third phase, included an in-depth trend study. Comprehensive research was done on the market trends using various media such as websites (WGSN), PESTEL; to map the factors that have influenced the part, present and future of the Indian market and Men Fashion industry. In the fourth phase, mood-boards, fabric boards and colour palettes were finalized for two themes. The biggest challenge was to design a fabric which would meet the aesthetic standards, is functional and would be within an affordable budget. The fifth phase comprised of creation of artworks, development of CADS, the sampling and development of the final collection followed by client presentation. Various concepts and textures were created using different media. The challenging task was to convert artworks to the CAD files using the software Penelope. The last phase carried the entire documentation of the project methodology, processes, experiences and the final outcome.

Overall, the project was full of great learning and knowledge where she understood different techniques, processes, basics of designs for weaving, flow of information, hierarchy of work processes and at last, comprehensive knowledge of the textile industry.
