This project, sponsored by Penguin Random House, India, involved working on several commercial publications in different capacities. The first part covers the complete design of Party Like a Star, a DIY guide and cookbook by celebrity chef, Shilarna Vaze who has catered to several high-profile celebrity clients. The book explains how to throw parties for different occasions, from small and intimate gatherings to brand events and weddings, complete with the author’s tips, tricks and recipes for every occasion. This project involved being a part of all the design decisions that went into creating this cookbook, starting with understanding the author’s vision, market placement, and research on contemporary cookbooks. It was followed by conceptualizing and carrying out design interventions such as photo selection and layouts, typography and typesetting, and creating illustrations for various uses across the book. It also included handling the complexities of elements like photo inserts that used different paper from the rest of the book and understanding the intricacies of the printing process. The final product involved working closely with the author and all the stakeholders at Penguin, from the commissioning editor to the production team. The second part of the project covered the process of designing and illustrating five Puffin books for children and the covers of seven other Penguin titles, working in roles such as illustrator, art director and designer. This experience offered a comprehensive understanding of the design side of the publishing industry. There was also a deeper focus on children’s literature which involved understanding the role design plays in educating and delighting younger people.
