The India Data Portal aims to improve access to usable data and high-quality visualisations for data-rich narratives in media reporting. The digital platform is designed and built keeping in mind the needs of vernacular data journalists. It empowers the journalists working with smaller/regional newspapers, freelancers, and online journalists to use public data to produce stories and engaging news pieces. Working with stakeholders from the field of technology and negotiating for an experience that aligns with the user’s mental model for a search-led digital product was a challenging yet rewarding experience. This often led to situations that involved learning the nuances and constraints of technology (front-end code, database management, APIs) from the development team and educating team members about user experience theories and information-seeking models. Preventing the misuse of a product that empowers one to tell stories is challenging, so, it was imperative to build guardrails such as autogeneration of visualisation title, watermarking, and labeling. Problem-solving for different products at Gramener has helped the student to practice design in a broader way and this has opened pathways to interesting opportunities.
