The Project titled 'Lighting - Innovative design and future solutions' aims to tackle some age-old neglected problems faced by railway passengers. It aspires to develop innovative designs and future solutions for lighting in the AC class coach of Indian Railways (IR), which will address the essential needs of the passengers in relation to general visibility, mood lighting, reading, signage etc. in order to provide the best possible experience.

The primary phase of research was heavily dependent on travel and interactions with the people identified through demographic profiling and stakeholder mapping. Only through several visits to the train yards and railways stations could he start to identify and validate some of the problems faced that were brought to light during the intensive one-to-one interviews with end users. Keeping in mind the pain points of the passengers followed by electricians and maintenance crew who form the majority of the stakeholder population, ideations and iterations solving those issues have been brought to the forefront.

The advent of the project through the different phases of research led to the identification of three major design directions - Luggage area Lighting, Lighting for efficient Maintenance and Experiential Lighting.
