My diploma film was about a Delhi-based middle-class contractor, who goes through a bad spell, financially and personally, in the wake of the 2008 recession. To keep his business going, he mortgages his property to the local land mafia. When he fails to pay off his debts, he tries to run away from everything, including his pregnant wife, leaving her uncared for. The story was inspired by real-life incidents that affected the common man, when the wave of recession swept across the globe. The sentiments conveyed in the film cater to a mature audience who can understand and empathize with them. It was during the Visual Scripting course when the story started taking shape. After the scriptwriting process, I made three storyboard drafts and scenarios. In order to build a backdrop that looked authentic, I used photographic references of Dwarka, Delhi. I explored a lot of mediums, from traditional animation to ball-point sketches to 3D animation. It was a challenge to create a composition and edit it to complement the underlying mood of the character and the conflicts that surrounded him. The use of a grey colour palette allowed me to convey the darkness, depression and frustration. Action sequences were portrayed indirectly, using ambient sounds, lights and shadows, to create a sense of anticipation and involvement for the viewer. The project was a learning experience in more ways than one. It re-affirmed the fact that proper groundwork, in terms of context identification, character building and their authenticity help the narrative and its portrayal. It gave me the confidence to pursue filmmaking and enjoy the hard work that goes into the creative process. |
