Dining Furniture for the Export Market

The brief for my diploma project was to design dining furniture, in line with the ongoing trends in the export market, and proposed to radically improve the company’s existing range to one that was elegant in style and treatment and yet had a robust and durable design. It also had to be in a form that could be completely dismantled to facilitate its transport to distant locations.

The project focused on developing at least four to five concepts for the range, one of which had to be detailed and prototyped. The range had to be fresh, interesting, production-friendly and economical. India scores over its competitors such as China and Malaysia by using wood as a material, in competitive pricing and putting in hand-crafted details. I had to work on the design for metal-and-wood dining range furniture for the client, who is based in US and Canada. Since it was not feasible for me to approach the client, my strategy was to understand their lifestyle and the current trends in the markets abroad.

After collecting this information, detailed mapping was done to find out areas for design intervention. I then began the process of conceptualization. The concepts were derived, keeping in mind the theme, aesthetic, form and function, ease of manufacturing, knock-down joinery and stability of structure. After the finalization of the design’s details, a prototype was made.

The entire process, from the conceptualization of the product to prototyping, was a great learning experience that gave me an insight into the real world and helped me understand the industry.
