Office system in solid wood

The primary aim of my project was to design an office-system in composite material by finding an appropriate application for solid wood, using in-house technology and resources in a valuable manner. This range had to compete with foreign brands for the middle to high-end segments of the market.

First, I had to understand an office-system; its structure, working, usage-pattern and the manufacturing process. Research also involved understanding its history and change in the usage-pattern over the years. Then, the appropriate application of solid wood was analyzed in terms of its visual appeal and feasibility. A market study was conducted to find a pocket for the product along with a field survey to understand the needs of an office. The user study pointed out to the behavioral pattern of the system and the study of the technology helped understand its manufacturing process.

Concepts were evaluated based on market, usage and manufacturing parameters. The finalized concept was tested by making a few mock-ups and 3D renderings and then detailed further for final production drawings. I came up with a basic system, which will enhance the company’s small product-line.

The experience I gained through this project will help me design another office-system. The elaborate research conducted during the project also threw up many other areas of opportunity, which may be looked into at a later stage.
