Keywords Family vehicle Urban India 2020 Styling
The brief for my diploma project was to design a “Vehicle for Urban India 2020-30”. India is a developing country and surely, in the next few years, it will become one of the most influential nations in the world.
In India, the choice of a vehicle has always been ‘family-oriented’. Thus, I thought of designing a car for the urban Indian family.
Although this project was intended to be a styling-oriented one, a lot of emphasis was put on research as well. The research included observing the everyday activities, needs and aspirations of the target users. I narrowed down my target audience to a particular user group of young professionals and family persons. A future urban transport scenario was developed based on this research. While designing, the users’ profiles, lifestyles and views on the ownership of a vehicle were noted and represented with the help of images. The vehicle’s layout was then decided and the form was developed.
The final deliverable was a 1:5 scale clay model as a prototype. The design features were inspired by the daily lifestyle of a typical middle class family and their perception of prosperity. The seating proposed to allow for more interaction within the group. The technologies involved were not too expensive and ones that by 2020, will become cheaper and readily available.
During the course of this self-sponsored project, greater attention was paid to skill development and the conceptualization process. I have also gained a better understanding of how a vehicle is perceived in the Indian context.
