The main theme of this self-sponsored diploma project was electric transportation. My project centred on developing an electric vehicle with a sustainable system for rural India in the future. Transportation solutions have to be designed with a vision for the future and not just solve immediate problems, which is currently the state in India. The present trend of individual mobility will add more vehicles on the road, thus adding to the existing problems of traffic, rising petrol prices and parking. My research indicated that this trend is slowly catching up in the rural markets as well. In rural areas, accessibility is the major issue and mobility is just the support system. Lower disposable incomes prevent people from owning a vehicle. There is a need for mobility device which everyone will be able to avail of without having to own it. I chose to develop a vehicle, with a sustainable and green support system, that may be owned by and shared within a community. Bion will be the electric vehicle for rural India in 2025. An easy-to-drive affordable car, it will have a system that will offer rental-cum-sharing, where people would pay only for how much they would use and remove the hassles of ownership. The vehicle would have a biogas fuel cell generator. When it would not be in use, it would generate electricity from agricultural waste to charge itself and distribute the electricity among the local community. Being my ‘first’ complete car project, I made many mistakes and learnt immensely from them. This journey has helped me to sharpen my skills. |
