The brief for my project at Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. was to design Swift for 2025. The project aimed to develop the exterior styling concept for Swift, which is not necessarily a conventional car. It is a car for the modern, young generation. The challenge for me was to imagine how the youth would be in 2025 and create something that they would be truly passionate about. The design of the car had to be new and define the future design language of Swift.
While the project’s focus was on styling, a lot of emphasis was put on research as well to acquire an understanding of Swift, as a product. An in-depth analysis of its form and evolution was conducted. Focus was laid on learning about how people ‘interpreted’ the Swift and their choices and expectations from the product. Since the younger generation has always been fascinated by sports cars and racing is only going to get bigger in India, I decided to look into the direction of a street super sports car.
The new Swift I designed is an ultra-compact sports car-cum-city car for two persons with a small seat for a child. The car has a masculine, mono-volume, techno yet simple design. It also has virtual, interactive interiors.
This project has been a good learning experience for me for it taught me how to apply my skills. I also learnt that sketching is much more than just a “play of lines” and is an important tool for the presentation of car designs. This project has enriched my visualization process and way of thinking.
