TVS MOTOR COMPANY Ltd., Hosur
Keywords Bike Adventure tour Professional Lightness
For my diploma project, I was allowed to select my brief. I first identified a range of areas in which the TVS motor company could launch a product, keeping in mind its viability in business. After internet-based research, I was able to justify a proposal for a product in the touring segment. The target user would be a professional from a metro, between 22 to 26 years of age.
The primary research was limited to Bangalore. Crowd behaviour was observed, informal interviews of people belonging to the target group were conducted and social networking sites such as Facebook were used to fill out questionnaires. I inferred that instead of a generic tourer, an adventure tourer would be able to create further product differentiation.
The initial sketching stage consisted of explorations in thumbnail form and was followed by detailed drawing templates. A styling direction for the product emerged, which was inspired by the lightness and strength of Enduro bikes. After a process of refinement, the final renders were signed off for clay. The final modeling process was of approximately three months, during which the bike was sculpted in 1:1 scale over a running chassis. The bike was to be based on the Apache 180 RTR chassis, with modifications made to the chassis as per the requirement. The final deliverables were a 1:1 scale clay model, market research, sketch explorations and documentation. Coming from TVS, with their off-road racing pedigree, a credible product such as this one would create a sensation.
During the six months of my diploma, I learnt how to manage a project of this scale with efficiency and the importance of meeting deadlines.
