My diploma project’s brief was to design a motorcycle for men in the age group of 22-28 years, mainly working professionals in Indian metros and who take some time out during the weekends for a trip to get an adrenaline rush.
The project was restricted to styling, conceptualizing and making the full-scale clay mock-up of the motorcycle. Therefore, my research was limited to offices in and around Bengaluru (Bangalore). Market research, target user and online surveys were carried out to understand the demographics, tastes and choices of men in this age group.
I decided to create a motorcycle based on an existing chassis. It had an 180cc engine with an output of 17.5 BHP. Minimum modifications were done and the same assembly line was used in order to minimize the cost. It combines the functional aspects of street and sport touring motorcycles such as a wider and taller handlebar for a long-distance journey, more low and mid-range output and wider seats for rider comfort. The removable side fairing allows the rider to change the look of the vehicle to that of a naked street bike. Long lines, muscular, compact and faceted surface language were the concept’s styling themes.
Through my diploma project, I have learnt how to incorporate clues from the research to make connections through automotive styling in order to validate the conceptualization and conclude a project on time.
