My diploma project targets the wellness of a person with a disability, in the terms of transportation and economy. The aim of the project is to make a disabled person self-dependent and allow him to move out of the controlled environment where he works and lives. Thus it is about giving an identity to a disabled person, so that he too can participate in society.
Amidst the creators of bikes and cars, I motivated myself to do something different in the area of transportation and automobile design. Right from the selection of the area i.e. disability to the making of the final product, I learnt the basics of designing a safe and functional medium of transportation. Since the product had to be designed keeping wellness in mind, much attention was given to its functionality. Little has been done in the area of mobility. I studied their needs and compared them with the existing available options such as wheelchairs, tricycles, etc. The biggest challenge was the non-availability of data that focused specifically on a disabled person’s mobility needs.

The final deliverable of the project is a full-scale working prototype of the designed vehicle. The product which I have worked on and developed displays the ideas and requirements of the user in their simplest form.

I considerthis to be more than just a project. It became an initiative to apply my skills and knowledge. The project is more system-oriented rather than product-oriented. By following such a process, I have tried to highlight the requirements and an opportunity that have scope for development.
