My project centered around exploring surface designs for tiles and adding more value by imparting better aesthetics and an individual touch to each product. I had to create a new range of living room, wall and bathroom tiles with innovative texture and motifs for an upcoming luxury home called ‘Residenza’ at Bangalore. My designs had to be distinguishable from other brands in the market.
I conducted intensive user surveys and market surveys in order to understand the present market trends and customer moods. The research led to certain key themes and served as inspiration for new ideas. I used concepts of color psychology, color blending and mood boards to conduct a mapping of user’s activity. After doing exhaustive styling explorations, the most promising design was taken forward for detailing.
I created a range in texture and motif tiles with color variation 12 x 18 inch in size for the bathroom walls and a range of texture and a motif tile in 24 x 24 inch in size for the living room and balcony (exterior). The sampling stage was quite challenging as the colors suggested in the design went through changes in the process and the samples looked different from the final concept. I had to work on good color scheme option, new pattern and texture and bigger size frame as well as in the parameters of the pre-planned budget.
My final designs for living room, balcony and bathrooms are being produced at Morbi, Gujarat. It has been a brilliant experience to design novel approaches while keeping production parameters in mind. |
