My project focused on designing and developing a range of premium perfume bottles along with an appropriate fragrance catering to the global market. I worked with ‘Jean Paul Dupont’, an upcoming fragrance line. The proposal of understanding perfumes and incorporating the insights into the final bottle design was very interesting.
The design process was a holistic exercise. While developing each concept, I had to ensure that it would not be a repetition of numerous perfumes in the market. I first studied perfumes, then conducted market research and started visualizing through sketches and then considered variations in each concept. I then designed 3D models to ensure the proportion for ergonomics. I included feedback from these processes and made prototypes. Specifically, there were five types of perfumes – Natural perfumes for men, teens’ perfumes, perfumes for corporate women, unisex perfumes. I also worked on value additions through dual purposes (empty perfume bottles as vases etc.)
The central challenge I faced was to design within industrial standards/limitations. Yet, this scenario sensitized me towards issues of practicality and feasibility of ideas.
This project provided me with brilliant exposure to trend, cultures and markets in Europe and the U.S. and has given me a strong base in identifying opportunities for teens.
Understanding cultural ideologies such as hip hop and deriving inspiration from it was interesting. I also realized that designing cannot be in isolation. One needs to understand what the brand stands for, in terms of the philosophy of the product. The project also sensitized me towards environmental concerns. |
