At the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), i worked on the ICARUS PROJECT. The theme was sustainable transportation. My project centered around designing a car to suit car sharing in Melbourne drawing on the experience of Flexicar – the Car share firm in Melbourne.
I designed ‘Zephyr’ – The ‘semi-customizable car share’ car and a conceptual car share system which explains how the entire confirmation, booking of cars, communication between vehicles is dependent on the mother server (the controller unit).
My ruminations are that individuals’ need to express themselves through their cars. Every day, trends and tastes are constantly evolving. Most people gradually get bored of their current vehicle and then buy a new car every couple of years, which contributes to increasing number of cars on the road. I have proposed a solution by introducing a car sharing vehicle that gives the user a completely different platform to express oneself, every single time he/she uses the vehicle. Flexibility and customization are important aspects of my design.
My project has been a journey which raised a lot of questions about spirituality and human existence. It has given me an insight into the nexus between sustainable development and deeper psychological issues. A person who is not satisfied with what he/she has tends to look for other material extensions as a source of trying to find one’s self in it. The only way to become sustainable is by designing the architecture of the inner self itself, rather than finding new ways of designing products and systems. |
