The objective of my project was to devise a communication medium for aged people in the current context of digital technology.
With a growing elderly population in the world, it is important for designers to better understand their needs. As individuals get older their bodily functions and abilities have a tendency to decline. This restricts the number of steps for functionality of a device in day to day life, and almost certainly in case of a medical emergency.
While there are several communication devices for people in general, the current communication interface and services are not suitable for elderly individuals. Elderly users are also not proficient in state of the art technology and seem to look only for basic services such as dialing a number. This scenario goes against the precepts of universal design which takes into account the abilities and limitations of all potential users.
My concept relates to the interaction of the device which includes the interface as well as product form. This project has 3 forms of Graphical User Interface as well as product form. It includes context, interface, GUI colors, content, functionality and services that the elderly people need. User testing revealed that the final prototype was liked very much by elderly people. The final prototype is currently confidential and cannot be disclosed here.
My project was an enriching creative endeavor. It gives me immense satisfaction to have designed Electronic Assistive Technology to benefit a social group that has not yet been able to access the full benefits of technology. |
