My film revolves around the themes of memories, remembering, forgetting, and storytelling.
The film uses the art of pickle making as a metaphor, analogical to the way we preserve our memories, but they keep changing with time, like the pickle slowly changes its flavor in the oil and sun. The film revolves around two characters, a depressed twenty something homemaker (Suman) and a middle aged door to door pickle seller in one space over the period of a few days. The pickles help her remember some bad memories. The pickle seller starts to teach the homemaker the art of pickling. In the process, she uncovers the homemaker’s past and acts as a catalyst to forget some bad experiences that are keeping her from moving forward. In the evening the rains destroy the batch of pickles they had made. The next day, the saleswoman vanishes. The homemaker decides to start making pickles herself. Now relieved from her past, she decides to create her own memories.
The film has four parts, titled ‘Picking the Right Fruit’; ‘Salt and Turmeric’; ‘The Spices’ and ‘Oil’ with each part representative of a stage in pickle making and also in the narrative.
During the making of this film, I blossomed in courage. I developed the courage to trust myself, take risks, make mistakes, and to be able to articulate my vision to people without the fear of being laughed at. My film marks a personal journey in exploring new avenues and having the conviction to choose the path that felt best to me. |
