Every human being aspires to having freedom. Freedom from books, work, memories, people, schedules, structures and freedom to do one’s own thing and broadly, freedom to just be. What intrigued me was the rather complex nexus of ‘freedom from’ and ‘freedom to’. We all fight for freedom. However, what happens after that? Would this scenario be complete utopia or completely disorienting?
My film ‘Escape from Freedom’ explores this question through a narrative framed around the nuances of a relationship. The essence of the narrative is that freedom can get overbearing, and sometimes, the only alternative is to escape from it. I first conceptualized my film and then read psycho-sociologist Eric Frohmm’s book of the same name to understand the idea of society and freedom better. After being in a relationship for seven years and married for four, the protagonists Aarti and Saahil separate in a bid to be free of the confines of marriage. The film takes a look at their lives as individuals once they separate and their desire to escape from the freedom that they once fought so hard for. The emphasis is on the essence of the experience of solitude, emptiness and external social markers that make it hard for them to exist outside the identity of ‘husband’ and ‘wife’.
The most defining learning from my project was in balancing the creative inputs given by team members with my own pre-defined vision as a director. I have evolved with this film to a higher level of self-expression and self-actualization. |
