Diploma Project Gajanan Upadhyaya – The Furniture Man of India
Arun Gupta

National Institute of Design

This film started off as a pure design documentary but slowly eased into the personal space of a designer to understand his roots and struggles in life. The story describes Gajanan Upadhyaya a man of few symbolic words who has a keen interest in the profession of teaching. At 82, he is still actively designing and teaching. It was quite a journey for Gajanan Upadhyaya, a poor farmer’s son, from Sarsav, a village near Ahmedabad, to Copenhagen, Denmark. He studied in one of the finest institutes for furniture design The Royal Danish Academy, where he was fortunate to study under the tutelage of one of the finest furniture designer and teacher the Academy ever saw, Poul Kjærholm.
