The design brief was to create a gamified mobile application that enabled waiters to be more efficient. Quantitative research was done on restaurant customers to ascertain the need for the product. The design included the six principles of persuasion by Dr. Robert Cialdini for behavior change. A key learning was discovering how human behavior can be influenced for positive reinforcement. Understanding the motivation of users can be used to effectively deploy triggers to achieve the right behavioral change.
Joel designed ‘Maitre D’, a gamified mobile application for waiters, that enables them to do their job more efficiently, by changing their behavior via positive reinforcement. Through points, badges and leaderboards tied together meaningfully with the activities and goals of the waiter, the platform can be used for daily task performance tracking, earning rewards and connecting with other waiters. Maitre D’ is the first step towards building a restaurant management application, compatible across various platforms.
