Rooted in South: Home Decor Products for Fabindia

Archana Deepak Valecha

Mohammed Naim

Fabindia was interested in the idea of exploring the crafts of Tamil Nadu and wanted to create contemporary handcrafted products for the festive season, taking inspiration from the state. Archana worked with them to create a cost-effective festive collection of tea light holders and incense burners, that were inspired by South Indian temple architecture, using various crafts of India. The project began with identification of crafts suitable for the theme.
Visits to craft clusters helped gain insights into the intricacies of crafts, capabilities of artisans and working of the craft space. Understanding of markets and consumer demands provided the base for product development. Research led to concept generation, followed by sampling, which brought the concepts to life and helped connect with vendors and artisans who helped in the execution. Crafts are the core of culture and Archana connected with people across the globe to get insights for the project.
