With improving longevity and decentralization of the family unit, our society is faced with a daunting challenge and that is; care of the elderly. As society and government policies overlook the pressing need to build an ecosystem to support the older generations, it is important to explore attitudes towards aging within families. Rhea’s film ‘Paalan’ dwells on the dynamics of relationships between children and parents and reveals both perspectives with respect to taking care of aging parents.
The documentary does not point fingers but puts emphasis on the importance of parents and children understanding each other. Instead of offering solutions, it highlights the importance of looking within, to find the correct balance between ethical responsibilities and practical problems. The treatment of the film was kept subtle because of the emotional and sensitive subject. Warm tones were used to give the visuals as much texture as possible through sound design.
