The project aimed to understand the context of design for mountain regions of India and explore the application of sustainability, design thinking and human-centric approach in textile design. Walking is a significant means of commuting in Sikkim, but the erratic weather makes mobility an everyday problem. Although umbrellas, raincoats and rain jackets are widely used, it is still impossible to get anywhere without getting drenched. ‘Gaadi Number 11’ was to enable, aid and inculcate a culture of walking in Sikkim.
The project involved extensive research by targeting students; the largest organized group of people walking regularly and understanding their needs and aspirations. Andreas’s design solution was a bag with an integrated raincoat, that could enable the students to walk through the rains without getting themselves or their belongings wet. The product featured a rain jacket that worked seamlessly with the bag. It could also be used as an independent product.
