Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete: Patio Furniture

The project aimed at designing a functional, playful and movable premium range of furniture using Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete (GFRC)
as a fundamental material, for patio spaces of the residential sector. Vaishanavi’s objective was to create a safe, peaceful and joyous set of emotions by designing ergonomically sound outdoor furniture, while exploring and understanding the material in detail. The scope of work revolved around exploration and implementation of various properties of GFRC.
Though introducing movement in concrete rather than a static seat, was a fun direction to take forward, it was also unconventional and challenging. Some of the challenges included heaviness of concrete, safety issues, finding accurate rocking radius and acquiring minimal thickness of concrete and high strength at the same time. The process involved understanding and exploring the material (GFRC), production process study, understanding the living outdoor spaces, ideations, explorations and mock-ups and trial and errors to find the perfect rocking radius.
