Parched: Furnitures of Desert

Harsh Hera

Pravinsinh Solanki

As a part of his project, Harsh worked with Portside Cafe furniture studio with a vision to make exclusive, luxury furniture inspired by Kutch and the Thar desert. The intent was to understand the life and terrain of Kutch and Thar dwellers, their culture and architecture to develop furniture pieces which celebrated the lives and success of people hailing from the region. Primary and secondary research helped in data collection.
Harsh connected, blended and transformed the patterns and motifs of Thar and Kutch into a furniture piece by merging two backgrounds with some explorations and sketches. He was able to produce some unique pieces of furniture which were a classic mix of traditional and modern styles. The furniture was exhibited at Raw Collaborative, Ahmedabad, which eventually validated the design for the desired customer. The project taught him that learning never stops and one should continually raise their standards and be updated about the recent trends.
