Through his graduation project Raja trained extensively on the ritual of making Kolam, a practice involving memorization of the sacred geometry of Kolam drawings composed of different designs, patterns and imagery. He engaged with the community of Kolam practitioners in Tamil Nadu and a design intervention emerged from this engagement. Different media for making Kolam were explored, resulting in the natural emergence of making Kolam using digital medium.
A mobile application was designed to help learners visualize, explore and create their own Kolam patterns and for experts to create intricate and bigger patterns. After visualization, the app also gives step wise guidelines to help make the Kolam on the ground in a physical form. The application digitizes Kolam patterns and allows possibilities of Kolam merchandise in different forms of digital fabrication. Raja got featured in a book as a ‘Contemporary Kolam artist of India’ for his widely appreciated Kolam creations.
