Universal Textile Mills & Jaipuria Silk Mills
Guide Shafique Afzal
Universal Textile Mills (UTM), one amongst the renowned silk exporters in India are known for luxurious furnishing fabrics catering to international and domestic markets. Vaishakhi’s brief was to design and develop three thematic collections of home furnishing fabrics for UTM with independent inspirations, consisting of six to eight designs in each collection, exploring different techniques of Jacquard weaving, digital print and embroidery.
The first collection ‘Aerial Vista’ was a range of painterly and abstract patterns inspired by aerial views of landscapes and geological elements. Developed for the European market, it was made in textured fabrics of Jacquard and digital prints with coordinates in velvet and embroidery. The second collection ‘An Island Getaway’ had a tropical theme and form-based patterning of flora, foliage and bird motifs, with varied scales and coordinated textures for the US Market. The third collection ‘Material Medley’ was an experimental take on patterns using the Heimtextil 2018 theme of ‘Adapt and Assemble’ as inspiration.
