This project explores the design of toys that encourage open-ended, carefree play, allowing children to explore, experiment, and create without fear of mistakes. Focusing on construction and pretend play, the aim is to nurture imagination, problem-solving, storytelling, and independent exploration in alignment with children’s cognitive development stages. The research combined trend analysis, interviews, and observation, revealing that children engage most with reconfigurable toys that offer varied outcomes and build emotional connections. Playful themes such as food-inspired elements, hybrid characters, and curiosity-driven features enhanced excitement and attachment. Parents highlighted the importance of balanced complexity—avoiding boredom or frustration—while children preferred independent play with occasional shared moments and validation. The design followed an iterative, play-testing–driven process involving mockups, user trials, and feedback-based refinements. The outcome is a set of versatile toy concepts that keep play fresh and personal, supporting both independent and collaborative play while fostering creativity, imagination, and storytelling.
