Ebby Malai Makkal is a documentary exploring the lives of the Paniya community, a marginalized tribal group in the Nilgiris. The film examines how systemic oppression and societal hierarchies shape their identity, forcing many to hide cultural markers like food, language, and dress. Despite government schemes, cycles of poverty, alcoholism, and exclusion persist.
Through intimate conversations with community members, activists, and representatives from related tribes, the documentary captures the nuanced operation of caste and tribal hierarchies. By centering the voices of the Paniyas, it not only documents marginalization but challenges the silence surrounding it, offering a critical reflection on identity, belonging, and resilience.
