Aar-Paar is an archival and educational project that uncovers the overlooked histories of migrant women in Bombay/Mumbai. Supported by the NID–Ford Foundation Grant for Design for Social Change, the project emerges from the inquiry: Who does the city belong to? Drawing from the Urdu term meaning “across” or “to and fro,” Aar-Paar explores spaces of social transition and migration.
Through primary research, the project documents oral histories of women from the Sindhi community, tracing lived experiences connected to the 1947 Partition. These micro-histories are situated within broader urban narratives, positioning women at the centre of migration and development discourse. The outcomes take the form of an interactive, open-source web archive that encourages playful, feminist approaches to memory-making and storytelling, using digital tools to reframe spatial history and collective remembrance.
