This graduation project tackles the declining relevance of Channapatna toys, a GI-tagged craft with deep cultural significance. Challenges such as reduced artisan participation, competition from mass-produced alternatives, and limited product innovation have threatened the craft’s market presence. The project’s goal is to design a collection of innovative toy concepts that bridge tradition and modernity while preserving the cultural and material essence of Channapatna lacquer techniques. Beyond individual products, it establishes a replicable design framework enabling artisans and designers to ideate, innovate, and expand portfolios in line with evolving user needs. Through iterative prototyping, artisan collaboration, and user feedback, the project delivers a series of market-ready, playful, and inclusive toy concepts. Key outputs include prototype products and a documented innovation framework, offering a roadmap to revitalize Channapatna craft, sustain artisan livelihoods, and ensure the craft’s long-term relevance in contemporary play and design.
