Filme Camra is a participatory documentary set in a village in Uttar Pradesh, where a group of children come together to explore filmmaking inside a shared space they name “Filme Camra.” With curiosity and play, they film, act, direct, argue, wait, and talk, slowly shaping stories influenced by cinema, gender roles, and the silences they grow up with. The filmmaker, who comes from the same region, recognizes their questions and aspirations, yet is repeatedly surprised by how they imagine and narrate. Early attempts at making a film fail, but each leaves behind memories and unresolved questions. When they try again in 2024, the focus shifts from finishing to understanding process. A thriller story emerges easily, with boys taking control and girls sidelined. After watching it, some girls express disconnect. One quietly proposes a new story, of a wandering leaf that sees the world and dies peacefully. Filme Camra is not about children, but with them, about shared space, authorship, and learning how stories are shaped.
