GP/BP Series: Exploring CNC Bent Pipe Furniture

  • CNC Pipe Bending
  • Stainless Steel Furniture
  • Reimagined Comfort
  • Industrial Poetics
  • Path Independance
PRANAV JAGTIANI
Ms. Andrea Maria Sonalie Noronha
This project explores the transformation of stainless steel pipe;a typically rigid, linear industrial material-into fluid, sculptural furniture forms through CNC pipe bending. The objective was to investigate whether a continuous, seamless line could be achieved without visible welding while maintaining structural integrity and comfort. The design process involved working within the constraints of CNC multi-axis bending, knock-down joinery, and material limits, where every bend served a functional or structural purpose. Rather than relying on heavy upholstery, the project experiments with comfort through tensioned materials such as leather and canvas, demonstrating that support and structure can define comfort more effectively than softness alone. The outcome is a series of three lounge chairs, each exploring variations of form, material expression, and ergonomic response. Together, the series reimagines industrial materials through precision manufacturing, questioning conventional ideas of comfort and revealing how rigid elements can be shaped into refined, expressive furniture.
