Timeless Threads: Revival of Traditional Chikankari is a research-driven graduation project focused on preserving, documenting, and reinterpreting the Chikankari embroidery tradition of Lucknow. Initiated as an archival study, the project evolved into a design-led exploration addressing the marginalisation of hand embroidery in the context of industrialisation and fast fashion. Central to the project was the documentation of all 32 traditional Chikankari stitches, including their variations and intricate jaali techniques, many of which are now rarely practiced. This systematic study aimed to safeguard craft knowledge while informing contemporary design applications. The research outcomes were translated into two curated fashion collections: one rooted in Indian ethnic womenswear and the other reimagined through contemporary western silhouettes for global audiences. The project positions Chikankari as a living craft, capable of adapting to modern design contexts while retaining its cultural and technical integrity.
