Born Out of Waste (BOW) is a graduation project that explores circular design strategies within India’s furniture manufacturing sector. Conducted in collaboration with Furnitech Seating Systems, the project addresses the lack of structured reuse systems for industrial waste such as foam offcuts, faux leather scraps, and rusted joinery. Using a circular design methodology grounded in systems thinking, the project mapped material flows, conducted observational studies, and engaged stakeholders to identify opportunities for waste valorization. The intervention focused on repurposing discarded materials into functional lifestyle products, particularly children’s room décor, while introducing simple, low-effort waste segregation practices for factory workers. Through material experimentation, prototyping, and iterative user feedback, a modular product collection including wall clocks, organizers, floor cushions, and soft décor was developed. The project demonstrates how design can transform operational waste into scalable, narrative-driven products, positioning sustainability as both a process and a value-driven brand opportunity.
